As the WWE’s women’s division was evolving in the ring (with a greater emphasis on athletics and storytelling) we took that as a cue to redefine how the “Divas” were portrayed in print/digital media. Nostalgia plays a large role in the fandom of professional wrestling, so we sought to take inspiration from the past and mix it with (then) current fashion trends. What we didn’t want was a cos-play vibe—that would be derivative. We wanted the women to not only own these looks but to represent that ongoing evolution of sports entertainment. Fortunately, the term “Diva” has long since been retired.
